Hello All,
This blog will serve to educate and enlighten you about kidney failure from the view of ordinary Nigerians. We will also give you our point of view and we hope we can make this as interactive as possible.
Kidney failure is common and we are now seeing younger patients with this disease. The youngest recipient of our support is 14yrs old and we are receiving letters of appeal from individuals in their late teens and early twenties. It is estimated that about 15, 000 people are newly diagnosed annually, they are therefore added to the thousands who are already living with the disease.
Ordinary Nigerians can't support themselves once the diagnosis is made because it is too expensive. For a kidney transplant, average cost is about N4 million and post -transplant medication is about N150, 000 monthly. this does not include dialysis before transplant can be carried out, live donor matching tests, check-ups in the hospitals and so on.
We need to understand what is going on, how we can prevent it and support those who are living a nightmare once they are diagnosed.
Please give someone a second chance at life.
Thank you!
